Light Requirements
Cacti need plenty of bright, indirect sunlight to thrive indoors. Placing them near a south- or west-facing window is ideal, as they can receive several hours of sunlight each day. If natural light is limited, consider using full-spectrum grow lights to supplement their lighting needs.
Watering Tips
Overwatering is the most common cause of cactus problems. Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. During the growing season (spring and summer), water once every 1–2 weeks, depending on pot size and indoor humidity. In the dormant season (fall and winter), reduce watering to once a month or even less. Always use the “soak and dry” method: water thoroughly until it drains out of the bottom, then let the soil dry completely.
Soil and Potting
Use a well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix that contains sand, perlite, or small gravel to prevent root rot. Ensure the pot has drainage holes. Re-pot every 2–3 years to refresh the soil and check for healthy roots, being careful with spines when handling.
Temperature and Humidity
Indoor cacti prefer temperatures between 65°F to 85°F (18°C to 29°C) during the day and slightly cooler at night. Avoid placing cacti in areas with high humidity or where they might experience drafts from air conditioning or heating vents.
Fertilization
Feed cacti during the active growing season with a diluted cactus fertilizer once a month. Avoid fertilizing in the dormant season as it can stress the plant.
Common Issues
- Pests: Watch for mealybugs, spider mites, or scale insects. Remove pests with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol or use insecticidal soap.
- Root Rot: Prevent by avoiding overwatering and ensuring proper drainage.
- Etiolation: If cacti become tall and thin, it’s a sign they are not receiving enough light. Move them to a brighter location.
