Spot for Our

New Writer!

Merry Meet,

Hello brothers, sisters and seekers!

Welcome to my B.O.S.!

My name is Stephanie and I am a 56 year old solitary, eclectic, gray  Witch. I've always wanted a Witchcraft site, but it never seemed the right time to commit. Now that my family is all grown up, I have nothing but time on my hands!

The Altered Goddess is filled with entries from my physical B.O.S. My hope is that someone will find something new and exciting to add to their own book!

In this space, you'll find my B.O.S.,s entries, inspiration, tips, encouragement, stories that have been gathered over decades and my experiences with magick and the Pagan community... Along with some new stuff.

Ya know, your never to old to learn something new!

In the 10+ years I've had this image in my image vault, I've never Bern able to decipher the signature on this painting. If you know the artist of this painting, please let me know!

Please allow me to introduce you to The Witch Crew. Besides myself there is the handsome and talented, Sven Cunningham and the beautiful and tech-savy Jessie Earl!

Sven manages his large FaceBook group, The Witchery-School of Witchcraft and Magick. Sven's help has been has been invauluabe in teaching me the ins and outs of turning my B.O.S. into such a large  website. His quick eye and attentiveness have caught things that would have missed

Jessie is my daughter and is over our Discord Chat Rooms, I know nothing about Discord.  Along with a general chatroom, she's made chat rooms focused on different subjects for teaching and discussion about those topics. I rely heavily on her technical expertise. Please make them welcome. I am grateful for their talent and gracious assistance.

The Altered Goddess site is new, so please bare with us as we learn how to work all the gadgets and gizmos.

Whether you're looking for magickal topics, Pagan parenting, helpful tips, correspondence information, or a new spell: I hope you'll find it here somewhere. I regularly post new articles and blogs, so keep an eye out for updates and new insights.

Brightest Blessings!
Stephanie Earl, The Altered Goddess

The Wicker Man

wicker man is large, humanshaped structure made of woven wood and reeds, traditionally used in religious or ritualistic ceremonies, often as symbolic method for sacrifices or offerings.

Historical and Cultural Background

The wicker man is most famously associated with the ancient Celtic peoples. According to historical accounts, particularly by Julius Caesar in his writings, Celtic druids used these large effigies for ritualistic purposes. The structure was designed to be hollow, allowing it to contain offerings, animals, or in extreme accounts, human sacrifices. It was then set on fire as part of ceremonial ritual to honor or appease the gods, seeking blessings like fertility, protection, or victory in battle.

Symbolism and Use

  • Ritual Sacrifice: The wicker man served as container for sacrificial offerings. Historical records and legends indicate that it was set aflame as dramatic and symbolic act of devotion.

  • Religious Ceremonies: It might have been part of festivals or seasonal celebrations, such as during harvest time or solstice events, to symbolize life, death, and rebirth.

  • Cultural Icon: Beyond historical use, the concept of the wicker man has influenced modern culture, appearing in literature, films, and neo-pagan rituals. In these contexts, it often represents ancient traditions, human ingenuity, or symbolic sacrifice, rather than actual human sacrifice.

Modern Interpretations

Today, the wicker man concept is sometimes recreated in artistic or ceremonial contexts, like burning festivals (e.g., Burning Man), where it serves as symbolic cultural or artistic statement rather than religious sacrifice. It has also become part of popular culture, especially through films inspired by the story, which highlight mystery, pagan rituals, and dramatic symbolism.In summary, the wicker man is primarily ritualistic effigy, historically used for sacrifices and ceremonies, symbolizing devotion, offerings, or transformation through fireIts legacy continues in cultural and artistic expressions around the world.

Witchy Facts:

  • Cultural witchy festivals exist around the world, celebrating folklore, magic, and historical traditions, like the Beltane Fire Festival in Scotland or Halloween celebrations linked to ancient Celtic practices.

Baba Yaga (Slavic Folklore)

Although originating in Eastern Europe, Baba Yaga is one of the most iconic witches of folklore. She is typically depicted as an old, fearsome woman living in hut on chicken legs who can either aid or hinder those who encounter her. Baba Yaga often embodies themes of life, death, and rebirth, acting as guide in magical quests.

Check out our Magickal Cookbooks in The Library!

We cover all the selections of your favorite cookbooks!

The dishes listed are great for family and potlucks!

We've tried to gather a good yet mixed subject selection of videos!

Stop by our Videos page in the Library

and find something interesting!

The Altered Goddess began as a blog for women and men, in the Witchcraft and Pagan communities, who have had their lives altered because of trauma. Trauma from loss, divorce, medical conditions, violence and other traumatic events. The blog is on the page titled The Altered Goddess. Use the form at the bottom of any page, to contact us and we'll get you to email your story and we'll add it to the blog exactly the way you wrote it. To preserve your anonymity, we will post your story with your first name only.

Stop by our Greenhouse and find all things botanical! From trees to herbs we've got it covered!

You also find our Herbapedia. From A to Z, the Herbapidia is filled with botanicals and their metaphysical uses. We've also got a section on herb crafts

It was alot of fun gathering this information.

A book of beautiful Sigils by Mystical Enchantments.

In the Library you'll find :

a glossary with a large collections of A to Z terms,

Magickal Foods Cookbooks, book list and information on different paths.

We have lots of topics covered and we are finding new topics to talk about all the time. Come on in and sit a spell! Maybe you can learn something new or maybe you'll leave some info for us to add!

Learn more about the chakras and how to balance them to live in peace and bliss. I admit I'm new to chakra studies, so we're learning together.

Did you know animals have Chakras?

I didn't and we have info on how to unblock them. Its very interesting.

Divination is a fascinating subject. We've made a strong list of divination techniques. From tarot to throwing bones, its sure to get you interested. Perhaps you'll find a technique that works for you!

Our Circle family's Naming Tree Ceremony is held at Samhain. It recognizes the past, present and future, of our families. It is a beautiful ceremony that the families look forward to each year. And while it is rather somber, it reminds us that the past does not hold us, we change and grow and in the end, it is hoped we are better than we were before and that new generations will remember us.

The Altered Goddess Community has very extensive lists of correspondences. We've tried to cover as many as we can .

From Colors to the Western and Eastern elements, your sure to find something to add to your magick! Please look at your leisure.

Something just for fun is "The Wisdom in Stones".  All over the site are little graphics of  happiness and positivity from The Wisdom of the Stones... Be on the lookout for them!

The color section is very thorough. From basic information to frequency( Hz), there is lots to learn about colors. While not all colors are here, I'll add new colors as I collect information on them. There's more information to be had than common uses.

Spellwork is a major component of Witchcraft and it is very interesting to learn about. In the spellwork section, you'll learn a few spells and you'll find out what to do should you think your spell didn't work.

There are spells to fit a lot of needs. You will also learn how I write a spell. I try to write spells for requests when I can. If you don't find anything to meet your needs, just fill out a form, forms are at the bottom of each page, with your request and I'll try to help you if I can.

Candle magick is a wonderful subject to dive into. From learning how to make candles the regular way with all the equipment to an inexpensive way to make and recycle candles. You'll learn about candle colors and candle etiquette. And the all important, how to dress a candle.

Shadow work is the process of exploring and integrating the hidden or repressed parts of yourself to achieve greater self-awareness, emotional healing, and personal wholeness. We can help you get started on your journey to self discovery and recovery from your inner trauma.

We've tried to create a through spellbook. With guides and spells, our spell book has alot of wonderful information .

Spirit animals are wonderful companions to have from the spirit realm. A spirit animal is a symbolic creature that acts as a spiritual guide, protector, and mirror to your inner self.

And much, much more!!
